The Impact of Dance on Local Communities: How Dance Schools Are Making a Real Difference

Dance is more than just a form of entertainment. It has the power to bring people together, promote physical and mental well-being, and create positive change in local communities. As one of Cleveland’s oldest dance school, we at Redland Dance are passionate about the impact of dance classes and proud to be a part of this movement. We believe that our classes and programs are just one example of how dance education can make a real difference in the lives of our students and the community at large.

Here are eight ways (in no particular order) in which dance schools like Redland Dance are positively impacting local communities through dance education, events, performances, and by providing a space where meaningful connections can flourish.

1. Promoting physical health

Dance is a fun and engaging way to stay active and healthy. At Redland Dance, our classes are designed to develop strength, flexibility, and coordination while promoting proper technique and injury prevention. We understand the importance of staying healthy, and our community of dancers motivates and inspires each other to push themselves to be their best.

2. Fostering creativity

Dance is a form of self-expression, and at Redland Dance, we encourage our students to embrace their creativity and develop their artistic skills. Our experienced teachers provide guidance and support, allowing our students to explore different styles of dance and find their own unique voice. We believe that creativity is the key to unlocking a student’s full potential, and we are dedicated to fostering this essential skill.

3. Building confidence

Confidence is a vital life skill, and dance can help to develop it in a safe and supportive environment. Our community of dancers is made up of people from all walks of life, and we believe that everyone has the potential to shine. Through performances and events, our students learn to embrace their individuality and gain the confidence they need to succeed both on and off the dance floor.

The positive impact of dance: At Redland Dance, we encourage our students to embrace their creativity and develop their artistic skills through dance.

4. Encouraging teamwork

Dance is often a collaborative art form, and at Redland Dance, we believe that working together is essential to success. Our classes are designed to foster a sense of teamwork and support, encouraging our students to work together and help each other achieve their goals. We believe that every dancer has something unique to contribute, and we are committed to creating a positive and inclusive community here in Cleveland.

5. Cultivating leadership skills

Our DanceStep program is truly unique and designed to develop leadership abilities in our students, empowering them to serve as role models and care for others in their dance studio community. Through this program, our students learn valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional judgement. These skills not only benefit our dancers in the studio but also in their future careers and personal lives.

6. Providing social opportunities

At Redland Dance, we believe that dance is more than just a physical activity – it’s a social experience. Our events and performances bring our community of dancers together, providing opportunities for socialising and making new friends who share a common passion. We believe that the bonds formed through dance can last a lifetime and create a sense of belonging and connection. The impact of dance goes way beyond just classes.

7. Celebrating diversity

Dance is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. At Redland Dance, we celebrate diversity by exposing our students to different styles of dance from different cultures and traditions. We believe that this exposure not only broadens our students’ understanding of the world but also allows them to develop a deeper appreciation and respect for cultural and personal differences among their peers.

8. Giving back to the community

At Redland Dance, we are committed to giving back to our community through events and performances that enrich the lives of everyone involved and create lasting memories. We believe that dance has the power to create positive change in the world, and we are proud to use our talents and resources to make a difference, both in our dance studio and in the wider Cleveland community.

At Redland Dance, we are more than just a dance school – we are a community of dancers who share a common passion for dance and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world. We invite you to join us and experience the difference for yourself.

She enjoyed growing his foundations of classical ballet and deepening his knowledge of technique and artistry. After his successful audition, she continued to mentor the young artist in preparation for his starring role in the show.

A highly motivated individual, Rebecca is continually inspired by her students and staff to provide more opportunities to learn, show respect and care for each other, raise the bar every day and never give up!

From Swan Lake to the Nutcracker: 10 Fascinating Ballet Facts You Never Knew Existed

Ballet has a rich history that spans hundreds of years, with iconic productions such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker captivating audiences all over the world. While most of us are familiar with the graceful movements and intricate choreography that make ballet such a beautiful art form, there are several little-known ballet facts that are truly fascinating. In this article, we’ll explore ten of these surprising facts that will have you seeing ballet in a whole new light.

1. The Dance Was Originally Performed by Men

While ballet is typically associated with graceful ballerinas in tutus, it might surprise you to learn that it was originally performed exclusively by men. Ballet originated in the royal courts of Renaissance Italy and France, where it was performed as a display of strength and athleticism by male courtiers. It wasn’t until the 17th century that women began to perform ballet, and even then, they were only allowed to dance certain roles.

2. The Tutu Was Inspired by Ancient Greece

The iconic tutu, which has become synonymous with ballet, was actually inspired by the ancient Greeks. In ancient Greek art, female dancers were often depicted wearing a short, pleated garment known as a “chiton.” This design was later adapted by ballet costume designers, who created the tutu as a way to allow ballerinas to move freely while still maintaining a sense of elegance and grace.

The tutu made its debut at the Paris Opera in 1832. The celebrated Swedish dancer, Marie Taglioni, donned the now-famous outfit for her performance in La Sylphide. Her tight-fitting bodice and bell-shaped skirt cut so high that it revealed her ankles were designed by Eugène Lami and became known as the romantic tutu. This outfit went on to define the style of ballet, making it an essential part of a ballerina’s wardrobe even today.

3. Ballet Was Used to Train Soldiers

During World War II, ballet was used as a form of physical training for soldiers in the Soviet Union. The government believed that ballet would help to develop strength, agility, and discipline in soldiers, and even established a ballet company specifically for military personnel. Many of these soldiers went on to become professional ballet dancers after the war ended.

In 2018, The Imperial Russian Ballet toured Australia and New Zealand to perform The Nutcracker and Don Quixote

4. Ballet Can Improve Cognitive Function

While most of us think of ballet as a form of physical exercise, it turns out that it can also have a positive impact on cognitive function. Studies have shown that ballet can improve brain function, particularly in areas related to attention, memory, and decision-making. This is because ballet requires a high level of concentration and mental focus, which can help to improve overall cognitive abilities.

5. The Nutcracker Was Initially a Flop

Today, The Nutcracker is one of the most beloved and iconic ballets of all time. However, another unbelievable ballet fact is that when it was first performed in 1892, it was an absolute flop and commercial failure. Audiences were unimpressed with the story and the music, and the ballet was only performed a handful of times before being forgotten. It wasn’t until the 1960s that The Nutcracker began to gain popularity in the United States, and it is now one of the most frequently performed ballets in the world.

6. Ballet Shoes Were Originally Designed for Men

Like ballet itself, ballet shoes were originally designed for men. In the early days of ballet, male dancers would wear heeled shoes that allowed them to jump higher and look more powerful on stage. It wasn’t until the 18th century that ballet shoes as we know them today, with their flat soles and delicate construction, were developed for women.

7. Ballet Can Help with Posture and Balance

One of the key benefits of ballet is improved posture and balance. The precise movements and alignment required in ballet can help to strengthen your core, improve your posture, and increase your overall body awareness. Plus, the constant balancing on one leg during certain movements can help to improve your balance and stability.

8. Ballet Was Banned in Japan

Some more interesting ballet facts: During the Meiji Restoration in Japan in the late 1800s, Western culture was embraced and traditional Japanese arts were suppressed. As part of this movement, ballet was actually banned in Japan for a time. However, in the early 1900s, ballet began to make a comeback in Japan, and now there are many ballet companies and schools throughout the country.

In fact, Japan has produced several world-renowned ballet dancers! Some of the most notable Japanese ballet dancers include Miyako Yoshida, who danced with the Royal Ballet in London for over 20 years and is considered one of the greatest ballerinas of her generation, and Misa Kuranaga, who was a principal dancer with the Boston Ballet, as well as the San Francisco Ballet and has won numerous awards for her performances.

9. Ballet Dancers Can Burn Up to 1,000 Calories per Hour

Ballet may look graceful and effortless, but it’s actually a serious workout! Depending on the intensity of the class and the individual’s body weight, ballet dancers can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour. This makes ballet one of the most calorie-burning activities out there – even more than running, swimming, or cycling. In fact, in a study published in the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science in 2020, researchers measured the energy expenditure of 12 professional ballet dancers during a one-hour ballet class. The study found that the dancers burned an average of 463 calories during the class, which is a significant amount of energy expenditure.

But the calorie-burning benefits of ballet go beyond just weight loss. Ballet also helps to build lean muscle mass, improve cardiovascular health, and increase overall fitness and athleticism. And because ballet is a low-impact activity, it’s easy on the joints and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels.

10. Ballet Has Inspired Countless Works of Art

From paintings to literature to music, ballet has been a source of inspiration for countless artists over the years. Some of the most famous works of art inspired by ballet include Edgar Degas’ paintings of ballerinas, Tchaikovsky’s ballet scores, and the numerous retellings of classic ballet stories in literature and film.

Dance Class Etiquette - What Your Child Needs to Know Before Attending Their First Class at Redland DanceRedland Dance

Dance Etiquette 101: What Kids Need to Know Before Their First Class at Redland Dance

At Redland Dance, we’re passionate about helping kids express themselves and stay active through dance. If your child is new to dance, we understand that walking into their first class can be exciting but a little intimidating, too. That’s why we’ve put together this article to help guide you and your child through some important dance etiquette tips that will ensure a positive and rewarding experience in our kids dance classes.

By following these tips, your child can feel comfortable and confident at our studio. From wearing the right attire to arriving on time and being respectful, these guidelines will help your child navigate the dance class environment and get the most out of their experience at Redland Dance. Our goal is to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every child feels welcomed and encouraged to grow as a dancer and good dance etiquette lays the foundation for an enjoyable experience for all.

1. Dress for Success

Feeling confident and comfortable is essential to enjoying dance class, and one way to achieve that is by wearing the right attire. At Redland Dance, we provide dedicated uniforms for each class that are designed to be comfortable and easy to move in. By wearing the appropriate uniform, students can focus on their dance technique and immerse themselves in the class experience. Our uniform policy creates a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels welcome, and no one feels out of place. In addition, proper dance shoes are also crucial, so we recommend checking with our studio for the appropriate footwear. By wearing the right attire and shoes, our students can feel confident, comfortable, and ready to dance.

2. Arrive on Time

Being on time is important for any class, but especially for our kids dance classes. It’s essential for students to be punctual so that they can prepare themselves mentally and physically for the class ahead. Arriving late can be disruptive to the class and can cause unnecessary stress for both the student and the teacher. At Redland Dance, we expect our students to arrive on time so that they can be fully present and ready to learn. We understand that life can be unpredictable, so we ask that students make every effort to arrive on time, but if they are running late, to still come to class and join in. By prioritising punctuality, students can get the most out of their dance classes and set themselves up for success.

3. Follow The Teacher’s Instructions

Following the teacher’s instructions is an essential part of dance etiquette. It’s important for students to understand that their teacher is there to help them learn and grow as dancers, and that the instructions they provide are designed to help them achieve their goals. When students follow their teacher’s instructions, they demonstrate their commitment to learning and their willingness to work hard to achieve their goals. At Redland Dance, our teachers are dedicated to providing clear and concise instructions that are easy for students to understand and follow. We believe that when students listen carefully to their teacher and follow their instructions, they can achieve great things and reach their full potential – as dancers and in other areas of life.

4. Be Respectful & Courteous

Being respectful and courteous is crucial in any social setting, and dance class is no exception. It’s important for kids to understand that they need to treat their instructor and fellow dancers with respect and kindness at all times. This means listening carefully to instructions, avoiding disruptive behavior, and showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication of their peers. When children show respect and kindness to others, they create a positive and supportive environment that encourages everyone to do their best. At Redland Dance, we prioritise respect and courtesy in all of our classes, and we believe that creating a culture of kindness and respect is essential for fostering a lifelong love of dance.

5. Learn from Mistakes & Embrace a Growth Mindset

Learning from mistakes is an essential part of growth, and dance class provides the perfect opportunity for kids to embrace a growth mindset. When students make mistakes, it’s important for them to understand that it’s a natural part of the learning process and that it’s okay to not get everything right the first time. Instead of getting discouraged, help your child to view their mistakes as opportunities for growth and improvement. At Redland Dance, we encourage our students to embrace a growth mindset by providing a supportive and encouraging environment where they feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. We believe that when students learn to embrace a growth mindset, they develop a love of learning that extends far beyond the dance studio.

Dance class can be a fun and rewarding experience for kids of all ages, but it’s important for them to understand dance etiquette and expectations that come with it. By following the dress code, arriving on time, being respectful and courteous, and having fun along the way, students can set themselves up for success and make the most of their time in our studio. At Redland Dance, we are dedicated to providing a supportive and encouraging environment where kids can learn and grow as dancers.

If your child has shown an interest in dance and would like to give our classes a go, we invite parents to book a free trial class at our Cleveland dance studio. We can’t wait to dance with you!

The Role of Dance in Developing Confidence and Positive Body Image in Children

As parents, we all want our children to grow up feeling confident and positive about their bodies. However, in today’s world, with social media and other pressures, it can be a challenge to help our children feel good about themselves. But don’t worry, there’s hope!

One activity that can have a big impact on a child’s self-esteem and body image is dance. Dance is not just a fun way for kids to move their bodies and express themselves creatively, but it can also be a powerful tool for building self-confidence and a positive self-image.

In fact, at Redland Dance, we believe that the benefits of dance go far beyond exercise and entertainment. In this article, we’ll share just a few ways in which dance can help your child develop confidence and a healthy body image.

Promoting Body Awareness

Dance is all about moving your body in different ways, and this can help children become more aware of their bodies and how they move. As they practice different dance moves and techniques, they’ll begin to develop a better understanding of their physical capabilities, and this can help them feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Every child is different and responds differently to movement and music. That’s why we offer a wide range of classes with various dance styles. We truly have a class for everyone, regardless of age or abilities. You can browse our classes here.

Encouraging Self-Expression

Dance is a wonderful way for children to express themselves creatively. Through movement and music, they can communicate their feelings and emotions in a safe and supportive environment. This can help them build a stronger sense of self and feel more comfortable expressing themselves in other areas of their lives.

In our Kinderballet™ classes, we help little ones express themselves through a multitude of games and exercises. These classes are specifically designed for young children from 18 months and up:

  • Kinderballet™ Cherubs (18m – 2.5yrs)
  • Kinderballet™ Mummy & Me (2½ to 3½ years)
  • Kinderballet™ Tots (3½ to 5 years)

Kids can then continue into our prep and year 1 dance classes and beyond.

Fostering a Positive Mindset

When children learn to dance, they quickly discover that it takes practice, hard work and dedication to improve. Through this process, they learn to set goals, work through challenges, and celebrate their accomplishments. This can help them develop a growth mindset, which is essential for building confidence and resilience.

Emphasising Strengths over Appearance

At Redland Dance, we believe that everyone has unique strengths and talents, and we focus on helping our students discover and develop these strengths. By emphasising the importance of skill and technique over appearance, we can help children develop a healthy and positive relationship with their bodies.

Creating a Supportive Community

Dance classes provide a wonderful opportunity for children to make friends and connect with others who share their interests. Through the supportive and encouraging atmosphere of our dance classes, children can build meaningful relationships and feel more confident and accepted. Building meaningful connections is such an important port of early childhood development and while our kids grow into young adults.

At Redland Dance, we believe that every child deserves to feel confident and positive about their body. Through our fun and engaging dance classes, we strive to help each of our students develop a strong sense of self and a healthy body image. If you’re interested in enrolling your child in dance classes, we’d love to hear from you!

Watch Dirty Dancing’s Epic Final Dance “Time of my Life” with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey

Let’s be honest, when listening to the soundtrack of the classic movie “Dirty Dancing”, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia for a time when dance was more than just a hobby, but a way of life. This scene has become iconic not only for its stunning choreography and emotional impact but also for the way it has influenced the dance community in Australia and around the world.

The scene begins with Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) walking onto the stage to join his dance partner, Baby Houseman (Jennifer Grey). From the first few notes of the song, “I’ve had the time of my life”, we know that something special is about to happen.

The dance that follows is a beautiful and powerful representation of the connection between two people, using dance as their language. The chemistry between Swayze and Grey is palpable, and their movements are perfectly synchronised as they move across the stage.

But the scene is more than just a beautifully choreographed dance. It’s a powerful statement about the power of dance to bring people together, to break down barriers, and to create a sense of community.

And we are certainly not alone! Around the world, the movie has inspired countless people to take up dance, to explore their creativity, and to embrace the joy and freedom that comes with moving to the beat of their own drum.

Even today, years after the movie was first released in 1987, the final dance scene continues to captivate audiences and inspire dancers of all ages and abilities. It’s a testament to the power of dance to transcend time and space, to bring people together, and to create lasting memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime.

So as we watch this final dance scene, let’s take a moment to appreciate the beauty of dance, the power of human connection, and the impact that “Dirty Dancing” has had on our lives and on the dance community as a whole.
